Cycling done already?
I'm cycling my 33g with filter media from my 10g, plus I've squeezed the foam from my 5 g in there when I started the tank last Friday, added fish food for good measure. I was gone for the weekend so I didn't get to check my levels until yesterday, when my nitrite test showed 0,25 ppm so I thought the kickstarted cycling was working, then this morning, nitrites are gone, and the nitrates are showing barely 5. Is it possible that my cycling is done that quick? That sounds unlikely to me but eh, I'm a newbie!
It could be finished. What I would recommend is adding some form of ammonia and wait a couple of hours and then test again. If ammonia is at 0 and nitrites are at 0, after adding the ammonia and waiting a couple of hours then your tank is ready to go.
I am doubtful too. The bacteria that breaks down the ammonia and renders nitrites and ultimately nitrAtes needs a steady source of ammonia to continue developing. If someone was placing food in the tank while you were away, then bacteria would feed from that. I would continue to add a little food every other day and test the parameters every couple days. IF you continue to read NitrAtes with zero ammonia and zero nitrites then I would think it safe to add two or three fish. Remember, all the established bacteria from used filter media or squeezings will not help if there is no ammonia source for it to feed on either in the form of raw liquid ammonia, fish poop, or fish food.
Oh well, too good to be true, just as I thought :P
I don't have pure ammonia so I'll go on adding fish food every other day! I've also added a few physaes from my main tank, they have small bioload but still, it can't hurt!
