Amazed at Lack of Research
I tend to spend a lot of my spare time checking out our local on-line buying site, Gumtree, just to see what's out there.
I am regularly amazed at the lack of research/knowledge of so many people that have obviously kept fish for some time and have decided to sell on their fish.
I see people regularly mis-identifying or naming pretty common species in spite of all the information available these days on-line and on excellent forums such as this one.:-?
As a prime example: An advertiser yesterday was selling off her fish that she had owned for sometime as she was closing down her tank. One group she was advertising as 6 large Bristlenose catfish, she wanted $15.00 each (not unreasonably priced), except the pictures that she provided with the ad were of large Feather Finned catfish!
I sent her friendly e-mail to let her know that she had mis-identified her fish, and that she may want to re-advertise them correctly as Feather Finned Catfish, as she would get a far better price for them, and wished her the best of luck.
I received no reply, but the following day I noticed she had re-advertised and was now asking between $50-$70 per fish (again not unreasonably priced).
So from potentially earning about 90 bucks she was now in with a chance of getting over 300!!
Feeling a little put out that she hadn't bothered to acknowledge my assistance, I sent her a quick e-mail with the simple message "Your Welcome".(Probably a little churlish of me!!):-P
Perhaps I should have just bought them for 90 and sold them for 300 myself Lol!!
I have to be honest, I think what's worse than a lack of research is when someone says "I've researched such and such and I'm going to do xyz", where xyz is the exact opposite of what ought to be done. Makes me wonder which Internet they are using....

Given the lack of some pet store employee knowledge, they were probably sold to her as Bristlenose catfish :BIGhmm:
A family friend has just set up a tank, with the advice of one of our friendly local LFS's.
She bought a 5Gal, no filtration and was advised to stock it pretty much immediately with the following : 2 Mollies, 2 Mickey Mouse Platies, 4 Guppies and a Sucking Loach..................... 2 weeks later her stock is as follows : 1 Molly, 1 Mickey Mouse Platty, 1 Guppy and 1 Loach. Needless to say I wasn't aware of this.
I've told her the fish she has left are totally unsuitable for her tank and she is still overstocked, I gave her one of my old filters from a spare QT I have and have offered to take what fish she has off her hands and replace them with a Betta. She's adamant that she wants to keep what she has, so all I can do is wait for her remaining fish to go the way of the rest of them in the coming weeks!:-(
An on-line seller for example advertises Synodontis Eupterus - Featherfin Cat 6-8cm $37.50, the seller I mentioned in the OP has them starting at 12cm. :)
My African Featherfin Catfish was $18, My fiance had to have it. But whether he wanted it or not I wouldn't fork over $70 for it. Even though I love our little catfish.
