Weird clear gunk in my filter

ITs really hard to explain but for anyone who ever had a clear fil or gunk or their airstone should know what im talkin about. I went to clean my filter out today, and I was horrified to find this clear gunk in the filter intake and throught the filter! so much of it was in the intake that it was actually hindering the "sucking action." It was even covering the filter sponges inside! what is this stuff? I usually clean the filter like this every month. HOw do i prevent it?

its definently not eggs. All animals in the tank are livebearers

Sounds more like scale formation or calcium build up sometimes associated with hard water.Allowed to dry,,it becomes hard or crusty but in an area such as filter uptake or filter compartment where it remains wet, maybe it would resmble what you describe. I know on the sponge filters I run that the inside of the air line tubing gets white gunk formation while outside of tubing gets hard or flaky if I don't keep them clean. Just a thought.:dunno:

I clean every month though. So much appeared so fast!

Well I cleaned out the filter but the stuff came back and clogged my filter again.

Heres some pics. THe pics are a bit blurry cause the only camera im using is a cell phone camera. Its basicly some white stringy stuff thats all inside the filter, so much that its sticking out of the filter outake (the water fall part where the water leaves the filter) and waving in the water. It even clogs the intake! It even covered my wood airstone that i just put in last night!!!!

this stuff is also completely covering the filter sponges

What kind of decorations do you have in the tank? I once had a nasty piece of driftwood that was causing problems in my 15 gallon, and it created a lot of gunk.
