Welcome, i hope you like it here.
Hi Joe! Welcome to the fish forum.
Well hello there Joe. Nice one on the Button factory joke. That brings back some memories.
So now joe, i have a question or two for you regarding your cichlid tank. You say that you have 2 Julidochromis ornatus (Ornate Julies) with your Sciaenochromis fryeri (Electric Blue Hap). Now my question is, are you positive that what you have are Ornate Julies?
Ornate Julies are Cichlids from Lake Tanganyika. The Electric blue hap is from Lake Malawi. Fishes from these two lakes, ideally, should not be mixed.
As you can see, the Melanochromis auratus is similar to the Julidochromis ornatus in appearance. Though I doubt this is the case is it possible that what you have is a Melanochromis auratus? This would be a far better tankmate for the haps.
This is the Melanochromis auratus

hello :D :D
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE FORUM /caps

THANK YOU ALL FOR WELCOMING ME.
AS FOR THE QUESTION ABOUT THE CICHLIDS. I AM 100% POSITIVE ABOUT THE ORNATUS. AS FOR THE HAPS.OR SO CALLED HAPS. I AM NOT POSITIVE. AS THEY ARE JUVENILLE. YOU CAN SEE LIGHT VERTICAL BANDS ON THE FISH. I LOOKED THEM UP TO ME THEY LOOKED LIKE HAPS. I WILL GET YOU A PICTURE MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME.
I ADOPTED TTHE 2 "HAPS" WE WILL CALL THEM FOR NOW. FROM MY FRIEND WHOS TANK WALL CRACKED. SO I TOOK THEM. I CANNOT SEE LETTING BEAUTIFUL FISH GO TO WASTE OR BACK TO A PET STORE. I HAVE MANY TANKS SO I SET UP A CICHLID TANK. SOON AS I GET A GOOD PICTURE OF THEM YOU CAN POSSIBLY TELL ME. AS FOR THE ORNATUS. I BOUGHT THEM PERSONALLY. AND SPECIFICLY.
AS FOR NOW THEY ARE GETTING ALONG JUST GREAT. BUT THEY ARE NOT FULL GROWN AS ALL THE CICHLIDS ARE IN THERE JUVI STATE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONCERN I WILL GET YOU PICS.
hey welcome aboard :D 8) :P
Photos of the fish would be great. Hopefully the Haps are actually something a bit better suited to coexist with the Julis. As for the fact that the fish are juvenile, that will curb any immediate concerns for aggression issues. Both fish are omnivorous, the Juli being a micropredator, so a mixed diet of flake and live/frozen brine would be acceptable. Tanganyikan cichlids are far less tolerant of large fluxuations in water parameters tan the Malawi are. It would be best at this point to adhere to common practice for keeping Tanganyikans (smaller, more frequent water changes) Should the "haps" turn out to be a Malawi species, I would reccommend rehoming one of the species (personally, i would rehome the Malawi, as I am a fan of the Tanganyikans) and seek a suitable replacement. When you have the photos, be sure to post them in the Cichlid subsection of FW Species.
Best of Luck.
Welcome Joe. As for the mix in your 20g tank, julies and Malawian cichlids, though not from the same body of water, can be maintained in the same aquarium. Some "purists" do not believe in intertwining the two ecosystems as there are somewhat significant differences in the biotopes. This should not be of any worry as many fish are now bred in captivity under conditions other than that of their home waters and shipped to our lfs. So, if anyone expresses disdain for your mix, remember, it's your tank and yous pays the bills. Sorry for the agitation Mr. Moderator, it just bothers me when someone tells a fellow hobbyist he's doing it wrong when all seems to be ok and the fish are thriving.
One afterthought, ALL auratus that I have or have had seem to be a little more pugnacious than most cichlids. Julis on the other hand are bottom dwellers and would do well with some sort of flowerpot. I don't know about the plants with mbuna though. The plants may get to look pretty ragged.
