First Mushroom!

Well I got my first coral today. A blue mushroom for a few things I traded. It isnt attached to a rock yet but I have it in a container with a rock with very low flow. My question is how long does it take for it to attach? Here is a pic for those of you who are picture junkies like me! Let me know what you think please.

I think ur off to a good start! He is so pretty. They can take anywhere from a week - 2weeks. Ifall goes well they he will spread fast. If you notice him blowing around you can put a pices of plastic mesh over him, I use to use the mesh that came off a turkey, wash well in white vinergar and ro water and it held them down till they attached, but most times in low flow they will be fine. Good luck with him.

Congrats on the first coral. It's all down here from there... just look at my tank. You have no idea how hard it is to not buy anymore corals... or fish.

Good suggestions tinydove. You could also try a rubberband, but that my cut it in half and you'll end up with 2.

I'm a phot junkie and that's a pretty decent picture there. GJ!

Happy Reefing!
Michael

I am gonna pick up some mesh tomorrow to put over it just to make sure it doesnt move too much. I would love to be able to frag it but I am scared of trying it on a 50 dollar mushroom. Maybe later I will get a red one that is only 25 and try it. Any tips on how to frag a mushroom?

looking good but you paid 50 for that!?

you can start by just cutting it in half or 4ths coming through the center. theres really no wrong way to frag a mushroom just keep in mind the larger the peices the faster it will regrow and the more mouth you include (the center) the faster it will regrow as well.

I had some store credit but they sell there for 50 bucks. How long should I wait before I try to frag it?

Holy crap that's expensive!!!!!!!! I thought my LFS over priced.

I would wait for it to attach to the rock, but you may find that you don't even need to frag it because it'll start spreading quickly of it's own accord.

You can use super glue gel to glue it to a rock. Whatever LFS sold you that for $50 took advantage of you. For that amount of money you should have gotten a large rock covered in mushrooms.

super glue gel works great for other corals but for mushrooms they tend to be too slimey and will attach on their own.

quite honestly you can just chop it into like four pieces, add them to your tank and in some time you'll find 4 mushrooms.

I want to try it but im scared I will mess up somehow and kill all of them haha. If someone who has done this before could give me a step by step of how they successfully fragged a mushroom I will try it and keep you guys and gals updated.
