Neon Tetras
How many neon tetras could i put in a 10gal

FordMan 02-18-2009 08:26 PM

18 if they're by themselves with maybe a plant or 2 ..15 if you dont do many water chages with no plants

jimmyhoye 02-18-2009 08:36 PM

if i had like 6-7 live plants in there also, how many could i get in there

FordMan 02-18-2009 08:43 PM

20 if your perfectly cycled don't over feed and have an over kill filter like an aqua clear 30 add them gradually too like 2-3 every week till you rach your desired level the more plants the more neons you can push and the best part they don't swim a whole lot so they don't mind a small tank opposed to a danio which feels the need to swim an aquatic mile everyday

is there another tetra that would work really well in the tank

FordMan 02-18-2009 09:30 PM

half as many black widow or black phantom tetras just as many lemon tetra's 7 bleeding heart tetras or 10 rummy nosed tetras or that many silver striped i'm refering each species individually i mean you cant put alll of these in there...

I wouldn't put rummys in a 10 gallon. They're among the more active tetras and there's not enough swimming space for them in a ten gallon.

Flame, ember, cardinals, glowlights and kerris are a few alternatives.

I would remind those who feed the smaller tetras such as silver tipped, pristellas, rummy nose etc. that these small fish have small stomachs. Sometimes when we stock a small tank with numerous small fish we have a tendency to over feed these fish thinking that the numerous fish will consume what is being offered and this is all well and good IF that is what happens. Most people however simply sprinkle X amount of food and don't really observe the fish to see that it's all eaten and as we all know,,uneaten food =ammonia and or nitrite spikes. Add to the equation a small tank such as ten gal and water quality goes south in a hurry and as Ty says in his signature,, The only things that happen quickly in the aquarium ,are bad things. I believe a ten gal tank would hold fifteen to twenty neons or other small tetras but as has been mentioned ,oversized filtration and diligent maint would be paramount.Any slacking would result in bad things happening quickly. Personally I would not place more than a dozen tetras in ten gal. Just my opinion.
