Celebrating our first Cherry Barb Fry!
During the last water change, I was totally astonished to find a teeny, tiny little Cherry Barb fry darting about! I've made no extra efforts to breed the Barbs, they did seem to be getting "in the mood" some weeks back but hadn't given it any extra thought. This guy seems to be the lone survivor - if there were any other fry that managed to hatch, they seem to have died/gotten eaten. Now the guy is brave enough to come out and mingle with the adults during feeding time, although he hides among the thickets of java moss/java fern most of the time. Seems to be growing at a remarkable pace, also, although I don't have anything to compare it to.
Here's a vid I snapped of him:
edit: Question for those with experience: From the size of the baby fish, any ideas as to how old he might be?
Congratulations! It is wonderful to know that you have provided the right conditions for your fish to breed even if only one of the fry survive. I had an attempt at breeding angelfish but my family was a little too into it. My dad tried to take charge and ended up killing all of my angels (don't ask). My dad was successful as a kid so he seemed eager to return to the hobby. Apparently he killed his fry by putting ice cubes in their tank when he had his try. He hasn't done anything that crazy since but I wasn't happy when my angels started to die off. A few weeks at camp and disaster strikes! From now on I am making the fish decisions. Its really amazing what has happened in your tank. Nature finds its way.
