Plant help, some are GREAT some are HORRIBLE!
Ok this is my second attempt at plants :) I have a 110w of light (or something close) in a 55 gal tank. Lights are 6500k plant bulbs (new about month ago) Lights on about 10hr a day
In my tank I have Anacharis, Anubias nana, Chain Sword Narrow Leaf, Micro Sword, and Moneywort.
The Anachris does FABULOUS!!! NIce color and grows like a weed
Moneywort does OK. Grows tall but doesn't have any leaves toward bottom
Everything else looks like hell! The Chain and Micro are all brown and looks like grass in California in the middle of a drought.
Am I doing some thing wrong?! Why are some of them so beautiful and others I just want to throw out in the snowbank?! Thanks Karl
Sorry if I left info out that you need to help me.......
The Anubias shouldn't be doing badly. Often times at chain stores, I have seen tanks filled with dead plants, and Anuibias was the only one that looked decent. You should dose some fertilizers.
Hi, Sorry i tapped out on the last post, i've had nothing but tank/fish/filter emergencies ! Good job on the anacharis. That chain and micro sword can be difficult in gravle. They're just not for your tank. You should try some amazon swords .You can try other types of plants some do well in hard water, i have wisteria in hard water and golden lloydellia .Seems i can't get smaller frilly plants to do well like any anacharis or hippiroides temples even fall apart on me. I use eco complete and api leaf zone and iron.I believe you have to snip the top of your anacharis to prevent it from hitting the surface once it does it will shed its lower leafs.I'm sorry for the spelling errors, one might think i would look em' up ay. ha ha.
Go with the plants that do well in your tank. Sometimes for whatever reason some plants just don’t work. If the tank is recently setup sometimes plants wont grow well. But the same plants might do better if you try again in a few months once a bit of mulm has accumulated. I have had random success reviving sickly plants with a flourish root tab. If your not already than add some fertilizers as said previously.
java moss or java fern always adds a nice touch to a piece of driftwood.
Oh yes yes. ^ I recently set up a large gravel tank and used aquarium plants root tabs on medium size amazons which had thin translucent leaves and they are solid and vibrant now also they are in soft acidic water.I'd forgotten i did this.Reccommend this for gravel substrate.
How long have you had the plants in the tank? I don't know much about plants, but I do know that some species will go through a die off stage before regrowing. It has to do with the plant acclimating to the new water parameters and such.
WOW thanks everyone! Yes I have gravel and I have Flourish from SeaChem, the one thing I wonder is it has calcium, magnesium, and iron......aren't those things that I want to eliminate for healthy fish?. I also have some API root tabs that I have added 1/2 of by plants that seem not to do very well. My water is a lil on the hard side and my ph is like 7.4ish.....
My Anachris has "roots" coming from about 1/2 to a 1/3 way up, do I do anything with them?!
