Well Water?

We just built a new house and it has a well, is there any difference in well water that is better/worse for an aquarium than regular tap water? I tested it and it is acidic, anything else that will make it less acidic other than the higher PH powder? Thanks!

How acidic? Unless the ph is very low, I would be more concerned with kh as it is usually low in acidic water and can cause an unstable ph in the aquarium. Crushed coral placed in the filter will raise both, as will a variety of comercial preparations. Maybe someone with more experience than I with raising ph/kh can suggest the best way to do it, if you think you need to.

Well water varies so much from area to area that it is hard to say if it will affect the fish. If the well has been tested and the water is safe to drink, it is probably ok for your aquarium.

It is very acidic, I have the powder to raise it which does help (I tested it) I also read if you aerate the water it releases gases and raises the PH, is this true?

How acidic, what is the pH?

Aeration will only raise the ph if the water has a high concentration of co2. If the co2 concentation is low, aeration will lower the ph. Test the ph of some of your water that has been sitting a couple of days.

It could change a lot from sitting. Des Moines tap water comes out at a ph around 10. After sitting a couple of days it lowers to about 7.6. I've heard this is because thay use a treatment process that drives all the co2 from the water.
