how can I tell if I forced my tank to recycle?

hello,
I have a 30 gallon tank with two gold fish that i have had for about a year and a half. I recently started a new job and neglected water changes for a while. I noticed my smaller gold fish had clamped fins and was not very active. I freaked and started a water change. Of course the gravel was just nasty, then I checked my filter and it was all most clogged and the whole filter box was full of what I think was algae. so I cleaned out the filter box also. now my tank is very cloudy. I think I overdid it with cleaning out the filter on the same day as a water change. the fish seem to be fine now, but, I am concerned with the cloudy water. I have the tank at about 68 deg, should I raise the temp up a little to help the tank cycle?

Water test with test kit such as API frshwater master kit will tell you what is happening in your tank. Or you could possibly take sample of water from your tank to fish store and see if they will test it for you. If you cleaned the filter box and filters with tapwater then it is quite possible that beneficial bacteria was destroyed. This could mean the tank will have to be allowed to re-establish it's bacteria (the good kind) so you will need some way of testing the water for ammonia and nitrites. Until you get the test kit or have sample tested I would feed the fish every two days no more and I would change out five gal of water every day with water that has been dechlorinated . Your temp should be fine where it's at.
