Goldfish, twenty gallon?
Are there any breeds of goldfish that can be in a twenty-twenty one gallon? I know most need huge tanks, but I have an empty 21.75 gallon tank and am trying to decide what to stock it with when I do. So...any types of goldfish that can be in a twenty gallon tank?
nope don't think so.
Sorry, no. Goldfish get quite large, even the plump cuties get very plump. And they need atleast 1 other goldfish of their same species (ex fantail with fantail) to be happy. A 20 gallon simply won't hold 2 adult goldfish comfortably.
The general rule for goldies is 20 gallons for the 1st and 10 gallons per every other goldie.
I think that 20 gallons is too small, even for the fancies. Goldfish enjoy the company of their own kind, as well, so even if 20 were large enough for one, it's most certainly not large enough for more than one. I know goldfish are often kept singly, but I don't believe they should be.
you beat me to it
It's also good to remember that even the genetically mutated fantail goldies get around 6 inches in length, not to count girth or all that finnage. They also produce a lot of waste (they poop. a lot.), and the smaller the tank they're in, the more upkeep you're gonna have to do.
When I was doing research it was recommended to me that minimum be a 55 gallon with 4 or 5 fancies.
Gonna throw my lot in here, too, and say no. They really just get too big and they are highly social fish. Keeping one alone isn't fair to the fish. I'd wait until you can get at least a 40 or 55 gal tank.
I do have a 55 gallon but it's occupied by tropical fish, so i won't be getting any goldfish even though I want some
that is very noble of you. most people put goldies in bowls and then they die and they wonder what happened or they think 3 weeks lifespan is normal for a fish that can live for decades if cared for right.
Well, I love animals and I believe that all animals should be given fair care, I hate that people put any fish in bowls that aren't even a gallon (and for goldfish that's tiny) and then change the water like once a month. It's awful. You wouldn't put a puppy in a kennel and not change any messes he made forever. I love the fish I have. Since a goldfish won't work for my 20 gallon I'll probably get a beta since that's what I had before (the poor girl died after seven years because I accidentally put something metal in there and didn't realize it was metal. This time I'll make sure everything's safe. One day maybe I'll have a pond for some goodies
I agree. That is very kind of you. All animals deserve respect and dignity. Maybe when the current stock in your 55 is gone you can fill it with goldfish. Or a pond. Ponds are amazing!
