Kissing Gourami compatability

Hello, am I able to keep 2 young male Kissing Gourami in a community tank that's 75 degrees (f) and also has swordtails and guppies? I am going to start my first tank in about 5-7 weeks after the cycling's done.

First, welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.

No to the kissing gourami. You don't mention the tank size, and this fish will attain 12 inches (yes, a foot) in length, and needs lots of room. Also, as it matures it can get nasty to other fish including its own; the "kissing" is a form of aggression, the same as cichlid jaw-locking. You can read more in our profile:

Personally, unless you have a 5-foot or larger tank, I would decide on different fish than this one.:-)

I have a 30 gallon tank and if I can I was planning on keeping them when they are small then moving them.

If you have the larger tank now, fine. If not, I would not take the risk. Someone gave me a maxim some time back which I have always followed: I never acquire any fish for which I do not now (at the time of acquisition) have a tank running that will accomodate the fish at its maturity. Many of us think we will get a newélarger tank, but circumstances can change and the poor fish is the loser.

And, these are fish that should have a group, and as the profile mentions, they can get nasty as they grow which fish do continually. The present 30g will barely suit the fish now, so I would not.:-) There are many lovely gourami to choose from that would manage fine in a 30g. Several are in our profiles.

Byron.
