Enter the Cichlid tank
I have a 40 gallon that I am planning to setup with a breeding pair of Convicts. That tank will also hold a common pleco which is already roughly 5".

I don't have any plans to add any other fish to the tank but thought I'd post here to see if anyone would suggest another fish or two and if so, what kind?

I did this what a mistake. Convicts overload. they breed to easy

I don't know if the pleco is a good idea with convicts that you intend to breed. Plecos are opportunistic scavengers, so they will try to get at the convict eggs (and possibly young fry) and will get beaten up by the convicts in return. Honestly, convicts are really, really mean fish, especially when breeding, so you're really limited in what you can keep with them. Possibly some fast top dwellers like a school of giant danios?

I have a Convict and I would give it to you in a heartbeat.

Worst bully I've ever seen, seriously.

I have kept a Convict tank for several years now. Great Fish, very aggressive. Like other cichlids, the keys is numbers, or should I say targets for that agression. Mine is a Standard ole 29G and I have around a dozen in it. Thats a bit of a bio load but it is a stable tank with regular water changes. The Convict is a wonderful fish to watch. Interesting behavoir breeding or not (there will be breeding). I would suggest and additional tank for move a weaker fish to in case they take a beatin. I have had to do that on more than one occassion. Give it a shot I think you will enjoy them!

Thanks everyone for the comments. I know they breed easy so that is part of what I want to have them for. I'd like to watch that. I have several LFS that will take in the babies once they are big enough and even toss me some store credit.

Good idea on the pleco... I like him and would have for the Convicts to tear him a new one... I'll not have him in there on second thought.

It might be best to have a pair only I think. I don't have them yet.. I am waiting on my 30G to finish a cycle to move some fish over but when I do I'll get some pics up and some status of my journey down the road of the Convict. (those mean old cichlids) : )

I am going to just tell you that you will have many more fish than you want to keep. As a result you should find a a LFS that would be willing to take the fry. Convicts have many fry at once and a lot will live in a tank with just them. I disagree that the pleco will be an issue it is a herbivore i believe and thusly wont eat the eggs. Also, the convicts will be protecting them well enough he wont be able to.

I have decided to NOT do this! I still think it will be neat but soon that will go away and I'll be left with many, many convicts. I doubt I could find enough LFS to take them all... even if I GIVE them away.

The pleco would get his arse kicked especially if I only had the two convicts in the tank and him. The pleco would wander over there and dine on anything he finds in the tank.

I am still going cichlid... I am going to the LFS today to get 5 to start off with.

***Don't worry everyone, my tank has been up and running for months!

Another tip with cichlids is to overstock the tank so they cannot form territories this way they are less likely to kill each other.

Thanks impact4 and everyone else who posted here. I got some yellow labs to get started. I read about stocking more fish than you would normally so they are less likely to kill each other. That seems strange but I can understand it.
