i got a load of slate from the slate cliffs in devon on holiday i can vividly remember packing for the return trip and loading the car up with 25lbs of rock:-D
i dunno about the US but most british garden centers charge by the kg which makes buying rock expensive i would look for a natral source ive never purchased any rockwork despite having it in most of my tanks

You can try your local rock and landscape supply. You know, places that sell rock, sand, gravel, etc.

We got ours from a tile store in the area. My girlfriend called and asked if he had any slate that she could get a sample or two. He said he had a whole pallet full. He did! We took about 6 pieces and it didn't cost a cent. Later took them out of the aquarium. Just remember that you have to move them and clean under the slate when you vacuum the gravel!

what do you have to do to the rock before putting it in the tank? i wanna build a cave outta of rock that i can just find near me. so how do i clean it?

I just use a scrub brush to get the dirt off. I do not use rocks from lawns or similar places that5 might have been sprayed with weed killers or bug sprays.
