Snail ID Please!

Can anyone ID this snail for me? It cleans diatoms like you wouldn't believe, it never goes in the sand but it has a "proboscis" (which you can see sticking up at the moment). I thought maybe it was a type of Nassarius Snail but I haven't read where they eat diatoms and they are supposed to stay buried in the sand all day! Then I thought maybe it was a Cerith but they don't have a "proboscis". Anybody seen anything like it? I would love to be able to get more of these since this one does such a great job. The snail is dark brown/maroon in color with a few large white spaces on it and is approximately 3/4" long. It's foot is dark colored also. It seems to feed mostly on the brown diatoms covering my live rock.

Looking at the pic i was about to suggest an onyx nassarius, but then I read your post :). I agree, if it doesn't go in the sand, then I'd be surprised if it was some kind of nassarius (but I'm no nassarius expert!).

But, I am very curious to know what kind of snail it is, if someone else can tell us!

It looks a lot like a Nassarius Vibex, but i'm not really too sure. The shell color is kinda throwing me off.

i have one in my tank, i didnt purchase it though. mine also avoids the sand but im still going to say its a nassarious. i think whats happening is your seeing the diatoms naturally die off day by day and seeing the snail move around your under the impression that its eating them. its possible but i believe its a nass and they eat meat.
