Rainbows trying to breed!
I got carried away with my water change today and changed out almost 50%. Went back later to check on my fish and noticed my 3 boeseman's rainbows and my 3 parkinson rainbows were all engaged in a huge battle. I watched for a while, seems one of my boeseman's rainbows paired off with one of the parkinsons and they were depositing eggs and chasing all the other fish away. I know my parkinsons are all males, I dont know about the boesemans. (They all look the same to me) Think I might have a bad male/ female ratio. I will keep an eye on them. I might have to move the female if they will not leave her alone. You would have thought she would choose to mate with her own kind, less all my boesemans are females.

All is calm now. I did not have to move anyone!

Males will often spar with each other for dominance. This can include flaring the fins, chasing and a weird dance thing like this.

From what I understand rainbows cross breeding with other types of rainbows is fairly common.

cross breeding is a easy thing to do with rainbows. But it is something you want to avoid. If you want to breed pick one type, don't cross breed. Cross bred fish are looked down upon and IMO you should not even try to raise cross bred fry. I love rainbows. And it's hard enough to find nice quality fish already. Stores carry a lot of mislabeled hybrids and washed out fish. That was what made me get out of breeding the big rainbows.

I agree. I am in no way condoning cross breeding, just stating that they will cross breed.

I watched the video, but I still think they were mating. Think the water change set the mood. I will not be trying to save any eggs. I agree about rainbows being mislabled. My parkinsons were mislabled at my lfs.
