Rainbows are food seeking missles
How do you feed your rainbowfish? I got a tank with 3 bossamani rainbows, 2 gouramis and some platies. whenever its feeding time the rainbows burst right to it, eating everything before the other fish even know there was food at all. I mean, it looks like they're gonna jump out of the tank everytime they sprint upward. Do you guys got any tricks for feeding a community tank with rainbowfish? So far I think some of the slower fish are getting quite skinny. I'v planned on moving them to a seperate tank, but its still cycling. In the meantime, you guys got any tips on feeding a community tank with bottom dwellers and slow moving fish?
Hah! I hear ya. I have Boesemani too and they are little piggies! But I also have Congos who really give the rainbows a run for their money. They are like little Piranhas at feeding time! Cories, Pearl gouramis and a pleco round out my tank. What I will do is feed a combination of flake, NLS pellets and either wafers or shrimp pellets for the bottom dwellers. I use a 2 handed approach...no kidding. While one hand is putting in a pinch of flake/pellets at one end of the tank I use my other hand to place the wafers or shrimp pellets down at the bottom for the cories and pleco. The gouramis, rainbows and congos mostly feed at the top or middle. When I feed frozen foods I put some at the surface and also use an eye dropper to squirt some down to the bottom. I watch and make sure everyone has gotten something to eat. My Pearls pretty much hold their own against these piggies.
I would suggests swishing a finger in the water or something to get the other fishes attention and bring them closer to the feeding area. Also spreading the food out all over the tank helps. Though the try rainbows can't be everywhere at once. Warning though, if you use your finger to attract the other fish, your rainbow will quickly associated this with "OMG!!!!!! HE"S GOING TO PUT FOOOOOODDDDD IN!!!!!!!". The association often leads to them striking at your finger or trying to eat it as well. My 4" adult boeseamis could hit pretty hard.
As a cruel game I use to put some dethawed bloodworms on my finger and hold it and inch or so above the water and make my bows jump.
I use a dropper like Jeaninel. Some of my fish will only eat bloodworm, blackworms, and shrimp. I use the plastic pipe droppers for this. The fish learn very fast that their is food inside. It makes it easy for me to give food to the slow fish, without having to worry about overfeeding the whole tank.
