new to forum and new to aquariums
I am a new member to the forum. I started a fish-only salt water tank in September. I have a 55 gallon tank, a sand base, and about 50 lbs. of live rock. The livestock I currently have in my tank is:
2 Ocellaris Clown Fish
2 Pajama Cardinal Fish
1 Purple Firefish Goby
1 One Spot Foxface Rabbitfish
So far my tank hasn't been without challenges, but I think its going well so far. I've learned a lot so far but know there is much more to learn. I welcome any tips or comments.
Hello and welcome to FishForum. :)
Welcome to the forum.
btw the fox gets HUGE!
care to post pictures and more info about your setup?
Hello, and welcome to the forum!
I'd try to post some pictures later in the week. In addition to the fish in the tank, I have a cleaner shrimp and an assortment of snails and hermit crabs. For filtration, I have the Magnum 350 with biowheels carbon canister filter. I have a protein skimmer, a Coralife Superskimmer, hanging from the back of the tank. The lighting is basic, the lights that came with the tank. Any other info about the setup?
Will the foxface get too large for the tank? I just added him over the weekend and really like him.
Over the next few months I'd like to get a flame angel and a tang if possible, and that would be about it.
unfortunatly I think the foxface will get to large for a 55. they grow about 7-8 inches and should be housed in a minimum 75 gallon tank. i must agree though, that these are beautiful fish. do you have plans to upgrade anytime soon?
im going to say the flame angel and tang are out of the question as well. the angel may possibly work as it doesnt get very big however they show aggression. the tang will just get too large for a 55gallon tank esp. with what you currently have stocked not to mention the space your live rock takes up. tangs should really have an absolute minimum 75-125 gallon tank if not larger for some species.
how often do you clean your canister filter?
Sounds exciting! Any chances of getting a bigger tank for that foxface?
Either way, I hope it works out and hope to see your pics posted.
No plans to upgrade soon, I just started this tank in September, although after some more experience with FOWLR, I'd like to try a reef tank. I try to clean the cannister at least monthly.
The LFS I go to has a book they use when they're not sure about something. The book has various information about the fish including necessary tank size and difficulty in keeping. There were so many variations of the foxface rabbitfish, and this particular one, the One Spot Foxface, didn't have the full array of information, but the book gave size and it was smaller than some of the other foxfaces, so the guy thought it'd be okay in my tank. I'm hoping it is, but are there any particular signs I should look for to know if its getting too big (or is already too big)?
I thought a Tang may be too much and most of those require 75G minimum tanks. I thought I'd be okay though with a Flame Angel. Here's the source for the Flame Angelfish (http://www.fishlore.com/profile-flameangelfish.htm), not saying its right though.
Here are some pictures:
