Identify this item - please!
I have this green hair like growth on one or two live rocks in my tank. Can anyone help ID this growth?
In case you can't see the image above, please use the address below. Sorry I do not know how to make it a link; as HTML does not work on most forums.

Looks like Hair Algae.
Usually means you have excessive nitrates, phosphates, or both in your tank.
Cody's right you can get rid of it with phosphate remover, water changes, or you can buy a lawnmower blenny and he will destroy the stuff. They are usually around fifteen dollars.
Thank you all!!
i dont recommend phosphate remover.
im sure it will work but when the algae dies out and the phosphates return from your original problem the aglae is either going to return or another bad aglae will grow.
i also dont support buying a problem to rid yourself of a problem (for example buying a fish that eats algae)
if anything pick up a mexican turbo snail
lets try to find the source of the problem,
if you feed cubes of frozen food i hear the water they freeze them in is high in phospates, how often do you feed and how much? what kind of water do you use? salt mix? what kind of lights, bulbs, how long do you keep them on? how old is the tank? how big? what do you have in it?
the more detailed your response on the tank is the more detailed a reply can be.
There are some snails that can be kept in FW, BW and SW. This one in particular is Vitta usnea. They do lay eggs in FW but the eggs are not viable unless laid in BW to SW conditions as these snails live in tidal pools where the salinity varies greatly. They can wipe out algae effectively but as always, the cause of the algae should be addressed. If you like the snails, why not? These ones are pretty to look at. I have the Clithon corona. They're found in FW to BW conditions but I keep mine in FW and they wipe out all my black brush algae in less than a week.
