Any help will be much obliged

Sadly my jack dempsey has recently died to getting stuck between a tank heater and the glass.

After I clean out the tank I would like to buy a angelfish. I have a 29 gal tank and I would like tankmates for my angelfish. Any suggestions.

I've heard tiger barbs, pictus catfish, and plecos work.

IMO that size tank would be too small for a pictus. They are very active fish and require major swimming room. My tank is 5' long and my pictus uses every single inch of it. I think tiger barbs are too nippy to house with angels. A smaller pleco (bristlenose, rubberlip) would work fine. I really don't know who are good tankmates are good for angels; I only know what shouldn't be housed with them. Sorry you lost your Jack Dempsey :-(. They are such cool fish.

I heard that angelfish eat neon tetras but not cardinal tetras. Is this true?

Possibly. Cardinals do get a bit bigger than Neons (and look better IMO), and are found in the same area in the wild as Angels... but it all depends on the angel's personality.

But now that you mention it, I have seen many tanks with Angels+Cardinals.

Would guppies or platies work? My aunt breeds her platies and guppies and she wouldn't mind giving me free fish.

Platies would probably be a good choice. The angels would also keep the fry population under control.
