I finally got my new 10gallon tank and I was so excited to get my new platies, but within the first month, 2 of my 7 fish have died.
Now the part I need help with is this; there is consistency with each death-- the fish bloats up, scales puff out, hides from the other fish, doesn't eat, and stays mostly on the tank bottom-- are there any diseases fish can get with similar 'symptoms'
Please post if you know anything! I want to find out what to do before I lose any of my five remaining fish!
Your problem is in the first sentence.
You should not have seven fish already in a month, especially if it is only a 10G tank. Did your tank ever go through a cycle? The fish may be suffering from ammonia and nitrites.
Also, are they all platies? Seven, nonetheless five in a 10G is overstocked IMO. Platies are very messy.
Yes, I cycled the tank. I cycled it for 2 weeks and had the water tested numerous times before I even considered putting any fish in the tanks.
No, not all 7 fish are platies, and not all 7 are kept in the 10 gallon.
Could we have a list of the 10G inhabitants?
Water Parameters, and do you use strips or a liquid kit?
There are a number of things that could cause it and water quality is one. We'll need your water readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. It could be that your tank is not fully cycled.
First we need to know that the tank is fully cycled....then maybe pursue some other aspects.
Did you get all the fish at the same time from the same store?
What is the pH of your water along with the other readings?
Are any of the other fish affected?
Describe the entire tank setup please.
I do agree that it sounds like dropsy.
Someone please tell me what cycling a tank is?
I've had tanks for too many years for me to mention.
Had never heard of cycling a tank until I join a couble of days ago.
Thanks for all the information guys! I am going to talk with my friends from the local aquarium some more, they've been a help too...
