external canister filter

hi. not so sure if i post at the right place.

i got a external canister filter for my aquarium and i seen many people place this filter at the bottom of the aquarium.

However, i dun have such a suitable place for my filter. i can only place it either on the top of the aquarium supported or at side of the aquarium.

So my intention is to use a pump to bring water out of the aquarium and into the canister.

So my question is.. has anyone tried something like this before and will the canister filter function as effectively if i place it not at the bottom of the aquarium.

thank you

I have my canister filter on the side of the aquarium. Mine works fine that way, it just has to be sitting below the water level.

=O

so for ur case . do u still need any pump from the aquarium to the filter canister ?=]

My canister pumps the water out o the tank. I dont think you need to add an additional pump, as long as the canister is below the water line. Your canister may not work the same. I have an Eheim Classic.

i believe your talking about a sump, which is alittle different then a canister

My inlet is at the top, outlet at the bottom.

Yeah, pretty sure you're talking about a sump. Frankly some pictures of just where you plan on putting the sump would be good. Pumping from your sump back to your tank is a good thing. Pumping from the tank to the sump and then back again is a very bad idea.

correction, sorry, I had that backwards. my intake is at the bottom.

Some canister filters do have both on the top. Have a picture? Any name brand marked on the filter?
