Aquascaping/plant ideas for 5g
I am currently setting up a 5g betta tank and would love some plant ideas. I want maybe 3 different kinds of plants that look like they "go" together if you get what I mean:-?
At the moment the light is a 5w fluorescent. I will have a look at the store tomorrow to see what bulbs are available for my tank.
So far I've sloped the sand from the sand back corner and put in a rock.
I am thinking of adding a few more smaller rocks.
For a Southeast Asia biotope tank, you could use a couple of different cyrpts. An appropriate stem plant for this set up would be ambulia; however, it would soon overtake the tank. Cabomba looks similar, but has higher light requirements. Perhaps one of our more experienced members has a suggestion for a stem / floating plant that would fit the biotope and provide a good environment for your betta.
Assorted crypts are nice... types aren't that important, just pick some that are larger and some that are smaller.
Floating... brazilian pennywort works well. I am using duckweed in two tanks now and, as much as many seem to dislike it, it serves the purpose well, grows fast ans is very easy to prune (just scoop out a handful when it gets too thick).
Aponogetons are interesting but may get too tall for a 5 gallon.
Ceratopteris cornuta or Water Sprite/Indian Fern is ideal. It is native to the area, and the dangling root masses are loved by all anabantids as browsing sites.
Down below, with less light, crypts would be nice; Java Fern and Java Moss too. If you don't mind straying out of SE Asia, Anubias.
I would add some wood chunks too, also authentic and good for the water.
