just wondering if anyone has had any experience in keeping severums?
what are their temperaments? i hear they are peaceful?
I have a Red severum and a Rotkeil in with a BN pleco, Raphael cat and some Redline Torpedo Barbs. They do fine with those fish. I 've also kept them with cories just fine. For cichlids they are pretty mild tempered. However they will eat smaller fish. I had a green severum that ate my Praecox rainbows so I wouldn't keep them with anything small like neon tetras and such as they will likely get eaten.
As jeaninel said, they're fairly mild-mannered for cichlids. Keep in mind that they grow to about 8 inches and are pretty bulky. Their habits are similar to those of most of the larger cichlids in most ways. They probably wouldn't be good tank mates for the lighter weight cichlids, such as angels.
I have kept these fish also, and currently have gold Severum which happily keep's baby guppie and shrimp population's in check.
They are somewhat herbivorous and will munch on plant's if not receiving some vegetable matter in diet.
I use New Life spectrum (lot's of vegetable, fruit's) for pleco's in same tank, and the Severum enjoy's the pellet's as well.8-)
