New to Fish Forum!
Glad I found this site, I look forward to gaining some knowledge about fish so that i can further my hobby.
Here's my first question:
I currently have a 20G tank with a Penguin 200 filter (hung over the back). I have noticed lately that there is a white film which is being built up on the light which sits atop my tank. I've also noticed there is some on the back lip of the tank (next to the filter). I tried to read about this stuff but can't find much on it, seeing as I don't know the technical name. I think they are calcium deposits? That is a complete guess. It doesn't affect the water, all my levels check out perfectly and the tank is crystal clear. After a week when I do my weekly water change, it becomes hard and crusty, I normally need to rub it pretty hard to break it up to remove it.
I just need to know if this stuff is harmful to my tank or if it's normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone and I look forward to talking with you all!
I believe you guessed it right. It is probably mineral deposits. You may want to use acidic solutions (Vinegar for example and rinse it well) to wipe it clean if desired. Check your tank & tap water for hardness. higher the hardness, more minerals (calcium salt, magnesium salt, etc...) in water resulting in more mineral deposit build up. Would not worry too much unless you want to keep it clean.
Just monitor the pH, NH3, NO2 regularly.
hello and welcome. :)
glad you decided to join us.
dosen't sound like a problem to me,as long as you can carefully
remove it from your light.
I agree - sounds like mineral deposits. Vinegar would work well to help remove it, but as long as you're living somewhere with hard water you can expect to have buildups like this. It's kind of an inevitable part of the hobby.
welcome to the forum.
