Using Root Tabs
Question: I just inserted root tabs under my swords and the larger plants in my tank. When would I insert the root tabs again? Two weeks, three weeks, or longer? I've got 260 watts (compact flourescent full spectrum 6700K) on a 100g and I also use Flourish Excel. Thanks!
I'd do a month. Root tabs last for a long time.
1 month is what I did with my sword. Just make sure not to disturb the sword if you don't have to. The extra black stuff can make a mess. I don't remember what it is but it makes a nice mess. Laterite I think.Either that or just give it one when you think it needs one after the month. Droopy leaves, smaller new leaves or just because you forgot to for 6 weeks. ;-)
That's right fish 4 all. It is the laterite that makes the biggest mess.
I purchased a box of laterite root tabs from JBL and if you so much as put your finger in the substrate now, a puff of laterite comes out when you pull your finger out.
Can anyone suggest a good root tab?
I used Sera. Not bad. I used it before and my crypts seemed to grow very quickly.
The Root tabs I've been most impressed with so far, and I've tried a few, are API Pro Series. They made an incredible difference to the growth and appearance of my plants.
The laterite is a good thing actually so geting one without it is not really what you want to do. It makes a mess but is worth it because it provides a steady supply of iron and other butrients to your plabnts.
I can see where once you have a good laterite foundation in the substrate that finding a different one would be useful. I am not sure if there is one but I have heard that if oyu can find plant stakes that don't have any phosphates in them, I thikn for roses but not sure that they can be used instead. Broken into small sections and put under the plants. I have used them but didn't notice much benefit and it didn't seem like they broke down much at all over a good 2 months.
Flourish root tabs are good. They're a bit more expensive but last about 6 months.
Flourish tabs are good but are still laterite based.
I had the problem of too much laterite when I took out my big sword. There must have been a good tablespoon of it left in the root wad and it made a huge mess. I will never do that again.
