Get rid of Algae the easy way. temporary
obviously this is just temporary as algae is a poo that always stays, but if you got algae on your wood or stones or gravel. just boil it on the stove in a pot of water for about 15mins boiling hot . then put it back in and the algae will slowly start changing colour and going away, kinda like a cancer patient's head. it works =)
anyone know how to stop al;gae popping up let me know
this works ofcourse, but it is also killing the beneficial bacteria that allowed your tank to "cycle" to begin with.
also, large rocks that get boiled have risk of exploding and causing serious injury or death.
yeah but once your tank is fully cycled and established as mine is, bacteria in one drift woof makes no difference, no matter how big. stupid algae.... im sick of cleaning it off the glass..
I wouldn't boil rocks...
I would pour boied water over them at the same time as cool water, so you won't have the stone trying to expand, then erupting... People have died from trying to boil rocks so you know...
The best way to get rid of algae, is to introduce plants, which will compete with the algae for nutrients, and provided their are a reasonable number of plants, the algae never wins... Also keep lighting on around 10 hours, no more... Make sure you aren't injecting too much Co2(around 3 bubble p/m per gallon of water)
Unfortunately algae is a fact of life in an enclosed eco system. The best way to deal with it is to make sure you have your tank balance. Lighting/ferts/food Too much food will rot and will feed your algae. Lights need to be kept to around 8/10 hours a day. Introducing a siesta period in the middle of the day helps, and will not harm the growth of your plants. I suggest not letting your plants rely on one large dose a week of ferts, rather place in water column every day or second day (just a few drops). The plants will grow well and outcompete the algae for nutrition.
Or get some bottom dwellers that would love that algae.
