Female Molly Fry Fighting
I have seven female fry and three male fry that were born about four or five months ago. Although everybody grew at about the same rate, the males haven't grown for the past two months or so. They spent all day chasing the females around the tank, taking a very occasional break to nibble on something. So I separated them from the females about a month and a half ago into my quarantine tank, since they were stressing them out. Since then, the females have been content and healthy... until I added the male back into the mix.
My questions are:
1. How do I get the males to start eating/ to grow? They are much more interested in chasing each other around constantly. They are healthy but not fat by any means.
2. I reintroduced one of them to my main tank, and after less than an hour, he had stressed out the females enough that they started fighting each other! It looked like they were kissing, but the fins were flared and they were making circles around each other. I broke it up by sweeping my net through a couple times and dropping some food into the tank.
Some info about my setup:
cycled 10 gallon tank
7 female molly fry (about 1-1.5 inch)
7 platy fry (about 1/4 inch)
1 male molly fry (about 1/3 inch)
2 live plants
cycled 2.5 gallon tank
2 male molly fry (about 1/3 inch)
4 platy fry (about 1/4 inch)
You may want to change the water in the back-up with the fry. This will take the extra waste out. but only take from 5-10% at a time. Good Luck!
Well, they are gorgeous, I will say that. Gorgeous to no end.
the makes are almost always smaller than the females the bottom pic looks like he might be trying to breed with her. This hasnt been proven at all but it is said that if males are seperated with males and females with females they will grow faster due to certain hormones that are given off...
Looks kind of like trying to breed but my male is DOUBLE the size of my females.
