Filtered Fry?
My platy just gave birth to a bunch of fry but now im concered that they could be being sucked into the filter. Should I turn off the filter until they get big enough? Its a whisper power filter. Or should I buy something to put the babies in like a net or somethin? I dont have a spare tank for them to be in.

I would not turn off the filter. you could possibly Put nylon mesh over the uptake on the filter or sponge.

If you leave them in the main tank they will be eaten. Lol my platy just had babies this morning too. And I've seen quite a few of them be eaten. I rescued 15 and have maybe another 7 swimming around in there. They probably won't make it but theres always a chance. If you don't have another tank then buy a fry net. But if you saved as many fry as I did you might have trouble housing them in the fry net until they get big enough to introduce to the main tank.

How big is your tank? and how many fish/ what kinds do you have in there?

its a small 10 gallon tank with 2 dwarf sunburst platies and 5 ghost shrimps. When i made the first post, i counted about 50 frys now that im home...Ive only found 2 :( but I bought a breeder net and put them in. I put some smashed flakes in but im not sure if there eating so I'll have to see. thanks all!

Thats actually awesome for you though, because now you can raise and keep those two fry! You'll have to crush the flakes to almost a fine powder, they don't eat much so make sure you scoop the extra out so it doesn't muck up the water to badly.

alright thanks. Im still checking occasionaily for more survivors. but alas, I doubt I'll find any more. oh well. its still looks as if shes is still pregnant because I can still see a gravid spot

Lol she really is. Don't worry you'll have tons of fry from her. Mine had a batch of fry two weeks ago and then again yesterday.

I just gotta figure out where to put her so I can catch all the frys. she cant go in the new breeder net because shell eat the 2 survivors

Well do you have another tank or somewhere for these baby fish to go? If not then don't try and keep all the fry... You could buy a breeding trap so when she has them they all fall through and she can't eat any... But then you'll end up with like 50 plus fry. And they will be hard to home.

yeah I know, but I was going to sell most to the aquarium or se them as live prey
