Mantis Shrimp

Does using an animal as a feeder count as animal cruelty?
Mr Mantis (not mine)

If only I could make room for a Mantis...

These things are scary, but very interesting IMO. Great video.

I didn't realize how big a peacock mantis is until I saw one at an LFS the other day. Jeez. Not small hehe.

Well done video. Can anything at all be kept with a mantis? After watching a few other videos it seems like anything & everything that moves would be fair game for a mantis...

Ha, I just asked a question about setting up a MSOWLR (Mantis Shrimp Only With Live Rock) tank up in the saltwater section.

From what I've learned not really. They'll kill most anything in the tank from fish, to snails, to shrimp. They aren't good with corals either because in their quest to build their burrow they aren't picky about what's attached to a rock when they want to move it.

I think they can get to a foot long. They're one of the larger species.

I don't think so. Most feeders have their lives ended fairly quickly, and honestly given that they're dying to a predator it'd be hard to refer to predation as animal cruelty.

Nutty question: Does anyone eat Mantis shrimp? We eat lobster, crab, etc. At a foot long that would make one heck of a shrimp cocktail...

Yeah, I know they eat them in some Asian countries for sure, don't know about anywhere else.
