Very sick red devil - HELP! :(

Hi. I'm new here, so bear with me. I have a 12 year old red devil that has suddenly taken a turn for the worst. His appetite has significantly decreased in the past week and he has been very lethargic, staying in one corner of the tank, nose up.

I have struggled with hole in the head with him on and off and have never been able to get rid of it completely. Just after I noticed a change in his behavior I noticed that he has little white stringy "stuff" coming out of his gills and some red spotting on them. He is also breathing pretty heavily. I medicated his tank with coppersafe because after going over all of his symptoms, I thought he might have some sort of fungus.

It has been two days since I treated the tank and he has not shown any signs of improvement. In fact, today he has gotten worse, He is now laying on the bottom of the tank and is very pale. I also did a 25% water change tonight hoping that it would help. I should also mention that he lives with a gold fish (a feeder turned friend who has lived with him for about 3 years!) who is perfectly healthy and has no symptoms that the devil does.

Oh yeah, and he also has a bulge in his abdomen, which I'm not sure if he's just getting skinny from not eating or if it's some internal problem.

If any one can offer any advice or insight into what might be going on it would be much appreciated. This fish os like part of the family.

Sorry to hear that. At 12 years old he lived a good long life. Maybe it was just his time.

Oh, and welcome to Fishforum!

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Fish do become part of our family, even if they do not stay with us for such a long time as your red devil.

What is a red devil? Does it have a different name?

Thank you for the comments. I'm still in disbelief that he's gone. I feel a little silly being so upset over a fish, but he was amazing! He was so intelligent and so fun to watch. He knew me and would get excited when I'd walk into the room. My gosh, I miss him.

Anyway, Im not sure if there is another name for them other than the scientific name. They come from Nicaragua and I think he measured about 15 inched in length if not more (should have measure and weighed him before I buried him.) They're bright orange with a prominent "bump" on their foreheads. They really are beautiful fish. I would love to have another one, but am afraid that none other could compare to him. Maybe in a few years....

Sorry to hear about your loss. It does sound like the fish was sick, but 12 years is a fairly long life for a red devil.

Twelve years is a very good, long life. Don't feel silly for missing your fish, afterall, he was your buddy for twelve(!) years. Sorry for your loss.
