correct temperature for rams
Hey everyone...

Just got a pair of German Blue Rams, but I'm a little unsure of the best temperature to keep the tank at. I've read a lot online, but there's been some conflicting advice. Most places I've read say to keep it at about 80-85, while others say 74-80. Which is best?

I'm not sure how they'll do in my tank, as my ph is fairly high. Hopefully they'll adjust well, although I know they tend to be sensitive.

The rams I have are kept at 82 degrees.I would not be too concerned about Ph So long as they are acclimated slowly. osmotic shock from being moved from water with low mineral content to water much harder with more minerals too quickly takes a toll on them as well as other fish. Rams in particular are sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry. But if water parameters are stable no ammonia spikes or nitrites and nitrates are kept low through water changes many of them do well. As with most fish any changes to the water should be done slowly.IMHO:-D

The higher temperature range you've read is the correct one. You'll notice a big change in how colorful the fish are at the higher temperatures.

Thanks guys, I'll turn up the temp a bit. They seem to be doing very well so far. They're not nearly as shy as I had expected and they're eating well.

I was going to drip acclimate them when I brought them home, but they had been in the bag for quite awhile and started to freak out pretty bad. They were jumping out of the water in the bag and just going nuts. I was worried about high ammonia in the water in the bag, so I just put them directly into the tank. The bag had been floating for plenty of time to even temperature, at least. I know that was a terrible way to do it, but I was worried that they wouldn't make it much longer in that bag.

Hopefully they'll adjust well...

Ahh I love blue rams. Used to have a pair. I will be getting another pair here shortly. Mine did fine and were very colorful at room temp. It is true that the higher temp will bring out their colors. Enjoy them! They are quite an interesting fish!
