Corydoras Catfish breeding
Has anybody here ever bred corry catfish?
Is it easy?
What type of corry is easiest?
What would I need to buy for the process, and the fry?
How do you sex corries?
i've never really technically bred them but they've bred on me a few times. i have a group of six bronze corys. from what i read on the net, bronze corys are best for beginners. as for method, my tank is near sunlight so at the break of dawn the sun triggers them to breed...well at least the last couple times that i've watched. i heard lowering the temp a few degrees and then warming it back up helps. as far as sexing goes, i dont have a clue. good luck on your quest to breed corys.
The dorsal fins on the males are usually taller and more pointed. The females also tend to be a lot bigger and more plump. Mine have also spawned a whole bunch of times, often right after a water change.
I've heard that you want two males to every female for best results. They will lay their eggs all over smooth surfaces, especially the glass. You can scrape the eggs off the glass with a razorblade and put them in a breeding net to prevent the parents from eating them. You want good aeration on the eggs, preferably by placing an air stone below the breeding net. I've read that many corydoras eggs are particularly prone to fungal infection.
this thread will hopefully help you. :)
It's definitely dependent on the species- some still have not been bred in captivity. However, most of the widely available ones such as aeneas or paleatus are pretty straightforward. A happy, well kept group (easiest way to get pairs) will often breed after a largish water change, especially with slightly cooler, softer water.
Which ones will breed and the easiest? (common names please ;-))
Most cories don't have common names. However, there are a few- 'bronze cories', panda cory...and then a bunch like "orange laser" which are all color morphs of the c. aeneas.
