Tank building contest
Hey! I just bought a 55 gallon tank w/ stand for 50$! And to top it off I just got a canister filter for 50$!

In other words I will start it cycling within a week. The tank was used for lizards and I will be replacing fine white sand with a gravel.

This is a clean slate for me the second tank I've ever got going, so I'm still able to make novice mistakes. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I still don't know what I'm doing with it, other than freshwater. Ill do more research on fish after a week or two of cycling but if I like someones idea ill go with it! Just like how jeaninel picked what gourami are going into my current 55. ANY ideas would be appreciated.

Heck I'm no moderator but lets make it a contest, best idea wins the prize of me building it and crediting it to you, Ill be sure to take tons of pictures at every step!

The more details, inhabitants furnishings, arrangement, the less spaces I need to fill the better.

only restrictions are: 55 gallon tank, canister filter

tape off the tank, and spray paint the back outside of the glass black
+black sand or gravel
+live plants
+a nice center piece of driftwood ( poss. covered in some sort of moss )
+a large school of neon tetras
+a bunch of cherry red shrimp
= sweet looking tank.

Rather then a center piece, I would get several pieces of drift wood and place them in different places in the tank. I read an article on dutch tanks once (they are really nice looking) and its better to not have just one thing in the middle as a center piece, but rather several. For my new 20 gallon I have two piece of drift wood on either side of the tank and ones farther back then the other one.. I don't know but it looks awesome. And go with live plants, for sure!! Tons of them, unless you decide you want plant destroying fish.

Are you interested in a community tank or perhaps a semi aggressive set up? A 55 would be nice for some small cichlids.

If your up for a little more maintance... GO FOR SAND!! Sand is so awesome, and it gives the tank a nice look plus many fish like cory cats or loaches will greatly benefit from it. I agree with one fish... Black sand is really the best, it gives your plants and amazing glow.

You asked what I want, I seriously have not decided on anything. Just make a tank that you think would be sweet and if I pick it Ill follow it to the letter. But yes, I am up for maintainence Ill even go brackish if the tank sounds awesome and everything checks out (IE compatible fish and plants and setup)

But I dont care either way if its cichlid, community species, geo-region, or collection of odditys. I wont look for myself what would be awesome until the tank is done cycleing. At that point Ill check these out and 90% chance Ill pick one and go.
