OMG! He is a gorgeous little fellow. I'd like to see his offspring!

Can anyone tell me how to determine the sex of a guppy? I have 3, 2 of them are bowtie and are together most of the time. I also have 1 fancy, and it stays alone most of the time. I'm thinking this may have to do with the sex, but I don't know how to tell the difference.

I think it is the same as platys and mollies, there is a fin to tell the difference. There is also this way of looking at their colors, males will have color all over their bodies where as females will only EVER have it on their tail.

Where is the fin located? And is the color thing just as reliable to tell the difference?

iamntbatman 12-04-2008 10:15 PM

The color thing isn't 100% reliable, at least not with anything but guppies. Then again, sometimes female guppies have great coloring all over. The anal fin is the way to tell for sure. In females, the anal fin will just look like a normal fin, but in males the fin changes into a penis-like organ called a gonopodium.

Very pretty snakeskin guppy.

Sorry to change the subject.
Can anyone tell me about the misquito fish? Can they be put with all kinds of fish?

Oldman47 12-31-2008 07:57 PM

El matador, there are 3 other threads that I answered within the last 10 minutes on this very subject. The answer is always the same for common livebearers. The anal fin, right next to where they go to the bathroom, is a triangle on a female and is long and skinny on a male. Some of the other posts have pictures.
