I feel the need to rave about my new sparkling gouramis, and ask, out of plain curiosity, about others' experiences with them.
First of all, I take to take my dear betta out of the 5.5 gallon. He ate my ghost shrimp on a fasting day, which, okay, I could understand. But about a week ago, he started flaring and chasing my oto cat. I tried moving decor around in my tank, and reintroducing the betta, but eh, no peace. So I moved my betta to a one gallon until I can find at least a 2 gallon for him.
So that left me with one oto in a 5.5 gallon. Thought about adding a few more, but out of my LFSs, only Petsmart carries otocinclus catfish; and I'm sorry, but after seeing this Petsmart's tanks, I'm not too keen on buying from them. So I got a pair of sparkling gouramis from a different store, an amazing, individually owned and operated place. And I have to say, they're about the cutest fish ever. Not even two cms, and they're so expressive!
I was wondering about sexing these guys. I know there aren't any physical clues as to which gender. Anything behavioral, though?
Any pointers on care? I've done some research, but it's always good to read personal experience.
don't know one thing about them, apart from they're real cute.
how are you getting on with them ?
They've grown a bit and colored up nicely. I've read the brightly-spotted ones tend to be male and the paler colored ones female (but I don't know how accurate this is). I have both extremes. One's very dark and spotty and the other has a very pretty pale-brown stripe but no spots at all. Still, my pale "female" is the more aggressive of the two by far. And that doesn't make any sense based on what I know about Anabantid behavior.
They're fascinating fish, though. I'd heard they were shy, but mine definitely aren't. They use the whole tank and hang out near the front whenever I'm there. They also seem to love exploring the tank after I change the setup during water changes, which cracks me up. I've never had such inquisitive fish.
Hehe- sounds like fun. I'm surprised your LFS doesn't carry otos though, I'd expect they will have some in soon.
