hyacinths, lilies, and oxygenation

Does anyone know how "surface" aquatic plants affect oxygenation? Do lilies, hyacinth, duckweed etc... raise oxygen levels in water, or do they "exhale" oxygen only into the air? I'm also curious if they reduce ammonia etc... as effectively as fully submerged plants...

I got confused by some info stating that hyacinth actually reduces oxygen levels - but I think that's because they often overpopulate and choke the surface, restricting light and current, not due to chemical reactions...

Thanks,

Jonathan
