Hey there guys,
I have a 55 gal. and i have 1 oscar and 3 jack dempseys. Heres the prolem i have, during the day i dont leave the light on to the aquarium, i leave a window curtain a little open, till i get home at 5. Then i turn it on and turn it off right before bed at 11 or so. but the other night the oscar ran into a rock in the middle of the night while the light was off and now is blind from 1 eye. Does anyone leave the light on over night or what should i do? Its happen more than once, i wake up and some fish will have scales missing, im thinking they have to run into things. But ive heard leaving the light on for to long causes alge to grow. Can some one help please?
I think it's quite possible that perhaps your fish are fighting after the lights are off and you're not seeing it. Three Jack Dempseys & an Oscar sound like a recipe for diaster, to me anyway, in a 55 gal. That's pretty small for those types of fish.
Just my thoughts and I'm sure someone here with more experience has a better idea as to why...
I totally agree. A 55g is appropriate for a single Jack Dempsey or possibly a pair, but is too small for the oscar and definitely too small for all four fish. Also, you've got some very aggressive fish there. I doubt the injuries are a result of "running into things" during lights-out; they're much more likely being caused by fighting which can really only be remedied by removing some of the fish. You definitely can't keep the oscar in that tank, so I'd find him a new home as soon as possible. Then, you can watch the Dempseys and see if a pair has formed, and rehome the third one. If you don't get a pair, you can really only safely keep one.
How come you don't leave the lights on during the day? Fish need a day/night cycle just like we do, so they should really have the lights on during daytime and off at night. That could be what's causing your fish to still be active at night.
