common plec question
never had any plecs so i cant answer my g/fs question. she has what i believe is a common plec about 7 inches. she wants to know if its normal taht he changes color often. he'll go from spotted to pale to dark solid etc.. i assume some can try to change acording to their surroundings however i cannot say for sure.
That's normal for most fish to fluctuate with mood. If a fish gets chased, they're likely to change colors, same with arousal and whatnot...
They will change coulours from light to dark depending on the amount of light in the tank and if it is stressed it will also change its colour!
i have never seen my common change color, but i have seen my gibbys change allot. in fat they are different every time i see them. perhaps you have a gibby and not a common, they are easy to mix up.
The common plecos will often change color also because of water quality issues, which is a stress factor. If it's happening often, I would take an inventory of what's in the tank, water params, diet, and general maintenance to make sure everything is where it should be. If all is fine in those areas, I wouldn't worry too much.
hmm i have never seen my common change color, i guess hes happy. lol
Bigger one is a gibby, the small grayish one is a common.
its also a camaflarge thing... you will also find the darker your gravel the darker he will be! mine have been on black and i couldnt see them so i added a little white to it and they show their marking alot more now!
when i moved my fish to my new tank took advantage to take a pic you can see how bright they go when upset (im not holding it)
When my common Pleco changes its colour it doesn't change that much, it only goes a little bit lighter when its dark and then i turn on the lights!
i was actually inquiring for my gfs fish. when i go out to visit her at school i'll get a pic! thanks for the info guys and gals :greenyay:
