Newbie Cycling question
I've read all about the fishless cycling(which is the way I'm going) I'm just not sure about the amount of ammonia? I keep reading different amounts. One says 4-5drops per 10gals, another 3-5 per 1gal, and a third said just add a few drops, let sit, add more till it gets to 5ppm.
Also declorinator/decloraminer- I know I need this, just not how much do I use? how do I know which to use/both?
The tank is a 29gal and one more thing  I was thinking about using Bio-spira(if I can find it) do I still do the above w/the ammonia or just let it cycle on it's own?
I've heard success stories with Bio-spira, but I've also heard a number of horror stories where tanks crashed after fish were added. Personally, I stay away from it and just let the tank cycle naturally. I think the 5ppm method is a good one, so that's how I'd do it.
A good water conditioner should remove both chlorine and chloramine. I use Tetra's AquaSafe.
Remember that you need to keep feeding ammonia to the tank daily in order for it to fully cycle. When dosing ammonia like that, you should add whatever amount it took to get to 5ppm daily. Eventually, you'll have a huge amount of nitrate and zero ammonia and nitrite, and the ammonia you add to get to 5 ppm should drop to 0 ppm by itself within 24 hours of adding it. That's when you know the cycle is complete. All you need to do at that point is a water change to bring the nitrates down, and the tank should be ready for fish.
