How long will a cycle "last" w/o fish?

I got help with my own situation, but I am still curious if anybody knows.

Once an aquarium has cycled (i.e. ammonia and nitrite have spiked and then returned to 0ppm, while nitrate continues to rise) - how long will this balance last without the addition of new ammonia (i.e. fish)?

Anybody know the answer?

if there is nothing to feed the bacteria,
they won't last long at all, within a couple of days
they will start to die,
