aiptasia killed shrimp?
I had a few aiptasia on one of the pieces of LR I purchased. I bought two peppermint shrimp to try to take care of them as recommended by the LFS. Within a little over a week both my shrimp are dead :( Not sure what happened to one of them, just found him, and then 2nd one was dead right near the aiptasia. Do they sting shrimp? 2 of the aiptasia are a little larger than a dime in diameter.
I have had my tank running for a month now, and just have some hermit crabs and snails along with the live rock. I plan on eventually having a few corals, any other suggestions with getting rid of the aiptasia...my tank is only 29 gal.
i highly doubt the aptasia killed your shrimp as they are supposed to eat it.
what are your exact water parameters?
SG,amonia,nitrite,nitrate,pH,temp. . . . .
im willing to bet that somethings wrong with the water as shrimp are sensitive to water conditions.
i personally never had a problem with aiptasia ( atleast not yet ) but ive heard joes juice is quite affective squirting a little out of a pipette over the infested area
My water parameters are:
Got the shrimp because LFS said that Aiptasia can spread quickly and take over the tank--
hmm your water params seem to be in good order..
i really dont know what to tell you.
and ive heard the aptasia really spreads if you try plucking it, why dont you look into "joes juice" and spot squirt some onto it?
It is narly impossible to try to pull aiptasia out of the tank.
And, I would say less than 10% of Peppermint shrimp actually eat aiptasia. Mine hasnt touched one. As suggested, try some Joe's Juice or Aiptasia X.
Or try a kalk paste (kalkwasser mixed with a small amount of water to a paste, Get the aptasia to retract itself, then cover it with the paste.)
Would this work?
My cheap method which worked beautifully, and I think I read it elsewhere on this site
I got a needle from the pharmacy (Watch out for them! I always keep the cover on when not in use), and filled it with about 1/2 mL of lemon juice (The concentrated stuff in the squeeze bottle works great). I injected the needle right into the body of the aiptasia, and squirted the entire amount of lemon juice into it, and you should see a cloud around it of lemon juice. The aiptasia disappeared completely within a few hours, haven't seen any more since.
The small amount of lemon juice used didn't affect my pH levels, and nothing else in the tank was harmed.
you can also plug it with alittle piece of the putty used for fragging and holding live rock together
