Filter inlet cover?
I'm having problems with a few of my smaller fish dying because they're getting stuck to the inlet on my filter. I have a Hagen AquaClear 50 in my 30 gallon tank and there is a grate that keeps the fish from going all the way into the filter, but not from getting stuck to it and dying.
I've saved them a few times but on occasion I've come home from work and one would be dead on the filter inlet. I've fashioned my own thing out of a 20oz soda bottle top and some foam filter media but it's REALLY ugly and I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas or knows of any products...
do you mean this one.................
can you not put decor in the way,i have a little filter like this one,
and i had plants infront of mine.
It's highly unlikely that a healthy fish would be caught against the intake and die there. Even my guppy fry can swim away from the intake without too much trouble. Most likely the fish was very weakened from being sick, or already dead. Remember, in a tank the water will flow towards the intake, unless its very badly positioned in a large tank, so anything floating freely, like a fish body, will eventually be sucked up against it.
You can put some pantyhose on the intake part and that way they won't get caught and its just a matter of pulling themselves off, as Tyyrlym said, if they are healthy. You also have an adjustable flow on your filter so perhaps turn it down a bit and the suction won't be to great for your fish to handle.
Agreed, healthy fish do not get stuck to filters. What are your water parameters?
You can get a sponge "pre-filter" to go over your intake tube. This shouldn't be neccessary for all but the most vulnerable fry, but here it is:
