Old War Stories
The ongoing “slider bar thread†which I generated caused me to think of some Old War Stories.
I am 54 and feel like I am setting in my “rocking chairâ€, smoking my pipe (tobacco only) and wanting to talk to the youthful folks but they are only interested in “exploring space†and not in my Old War Stories.
I will try a few (I am generating this in MS Word and copying/pasting) and if anyone is interested in more (do not want to bore you young folks) please advise.
In the early 70’s I was doing “stochastic modeling†in CDC assembly language on the 3rd fastest computer in the world at UT Austin. (I was “working with†a post doc.) [the 2 fastest were German computers at NASA.]
The stacks of “punch cards†would easily fill up a 20’x20’ room to hip level.
We had to “run the program†immediately after midnight as the “computer science guys†would really “get PO’ed†if we ran it during normal hours as it would “lock up†the entire university and they would “lock us outâ€!!
Unix, TCP/IP and the Internet were still a “glimmer in Dennis Ritchie’s eyeâ€.
Skipping some “good stories†and getting into the PC generation in the early 80’s (many members of this forum were not even alive then) & DOS 2.x.
10 Meg (not Gig) hard drives were being marketed with a “new MFM technology†and cost several $K.
If anyone wants me to continue please advise.
This sounds like it could get very interesting, please do continue... :)
