Betta filter advice sponge and carbon?

1 Attachment(s)
I have Penn Plax Cascade filter with spray bar in my Betta tank. It has sponge so I took out the cheap carbon to use two sponges so I could rinse one out in tank water once in awhile and still have the other working and not create a cycle.

Now I have purchased some good carbon and I am thinking I should have some in a hose bag small amount I could squeeze in.

I am currently doing to 50% water changes a week.

Thanks,
Tamara

welcome to the forum

is there a reason why you think you need carbon?

I am thinking it would help on water changes

Your current water change schedule is terrific - I'm not sure what you mean by help on water changes.

Thanks for the compliment. I was thinking carbon would make my water even better for my betta. He is active, greets me, blows bubbles and I change the decor for him.
I just want the best. The longest he has gone is 5 days w/o a change and that is when I am gone and he is fed lightly so that helps.
Thinking of live plant for him. I have low lighting led. I am happy with his tank and he is in the kitchen and receives a lot of attention.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're asking if putting carbon pellets in the filter is ok? I don't see how it can hurt if that is what you're asking.

It can't hurt to use carbon, but it's not necessary. Since you haven't been using it, give it a try - see if you can tell the difference. I certainly couldn't tell the difference when i stopped using it, so I never went back to It.

That is what I was thinking. It would be a nice extra.

Without live plants it certainly can't hurt but with your water change schedule I doubt it will make much difference. If you add plants you don't want or need it anymore as it can soak up some nutrients that the plants use.

If you want to try a plant and don't want to fart with lighting just go with some crypts.
