Could I Happily House.....
Could I happily house my Betta and six Cory Cats in a 20 gallon? I saw one that was long and short and thought it would work perfect since neither of those types of fish like tall aquariums. Let me know if I'm right or wrong on this. Would six Cory Cats be two many?
This sounds like an awesome set up!! If its long then you could get even more then 6 cory cats. Kudos on the good betta home :D
Yup, a 20 long would be a great setup. Are you going to use sand for the cories?
In a 20 long I think you'd probably be safe with up to a dozen cories and a single betta. Of course, you'd want to use a soft substrate like sand, properly cycle the tank and add your cories slowly so as not to overload the biological filter.
Yeah I was looking into sand for the cories. How many cories should I add at a time and should the Betta be in there first or last?
I plan on doing this set up the beginning of next year. It's my x-mas gift to myself. But I want all the right information so I know what Im doing when the time comes. Is that crazy that I prepare that far in advance? lol
The further ahead you plan, the better!
How many cories to add at a time depends on the number you plan on having in total. If you were to have 12, you should probably do three batches of four. If you were to have 10, two batches of five would probably be ok. I would add the betta last. They can be aggressive fish, and usually it's a good idea to add the most aggressive fish to the tank last in order to reduce the chances that he'll establish a territory and disapprove of other fish intruding upon it.
Not at all, its great that your doing your research now so your prepared.
Have you looked into cycling your tank? Thats the biggest thing right now.
I would think that adding the cory cats first would be a good idea, just so the betta doesn't get territorial. So when your tanks fully cycled add say 6 cory cats, and then wait a few weeks keeping an eye on the water parameters. And if all is good within 1-2 weeks, if you are planning on keeping a dozen, then add six more. Then wait another 1-2 weeks keeping an eye on water stats and add your betta!
Lol darn... To slow, curse you batman!!!
awesome advice guys thanks
Sounds like a lovely setup :)
You could also do 8 cories and another bottom dweller like an albino bushynose pleco or something...
