I just went to the pet store yesterday and got some pond snails. Right now I have them in a small container (like 1 gallon) with some gravel and java moss. I JUST set up my 5 gallon tank (like 2 hours ago) and I won't have a puffer in there for a week or two. I have about 4 different live plants in there ....Anyways...
If I add the pond snails to the 5 gallon in a day or two will they completely take over the tank in the few weeks before the puffer arrives? If they do infest the tank in that time, will the puffer manage to get it under control by himself?
I have about 10 pond snails...3 large ones and the rest are TINY.
P.S. I was hoping to breed these, but I don't know how much luck I'm going to have with them in the little container xD
Oh yeah, and how long does it take to get the good bacteria built up in my tank? Should I maybe get a couple of dianos first?
I put a bunch of snails in my tank when I was cycling it hoping to do the same thing. Within a week of adding the puffer, they were GONE. Also, they had laid many eggs, but puff seemed to munch them as soon as they hatched, as I never saw any grown ones, only tiny moving dots occasionally.
If you want to use these snails to produce more, I'd advice keeping them in the 1G. Also, here's a few tips I've discovered. 1) they breed faster in warmer water, a small heater is probably a worthwhile investment 2) they'll eat just about as much as you can give them, provided you keep the water quality up, the rule is basically the more you feed, the faster they grow and breed
Alright. Unfortunaly the only heat they're getting it from the sun when they sit on the windowsill :P I dunno if it'll work or not but..,maybe :O
Right now I just put the java moss in there and have been dropping a pellet or two of these frog food i have xD
My little experiement XD
