As I have been reading posts, it seems frogbit might be a good floating plant that might be more controlable (ha!) than duckweed. I am having a problem finding it at the lfs which leads me to believe it might be banned here in Florida although I can not find it on the banned list. Anyway, looking at the aquarium plant sites, I have only found one so far with it available and that is of the large pond variety. Any suggestions or information?
I think i have heard of it being banned in FL. I'll pm the site where I had to buy mine. Don't want to go violating any ToU policies.
I was only able to find mine online. It did not do well though in my tanks. I think it might of needed more airflow, but I keep all my tanks tightly covered (so it is hot and humid in the gap between water and lid).
I've had better luck with Dwarf Water Lettuce.
Have a read of our profile on Amazon Frogbit [click the shaded name], it will explain why this plant is banned in parts of NA, and why it sometimes does not fare well in aquaria.
The ideal floating plant is Water Sprite. Nothing can match this. An alternative is Brazilian Pennywort, allowed to float. Both are in our profiles, again click names. These do better generally because they are not tiny like duckweed and similar, and they thus not only provide more interest for viewing but fish really enjoy browsing through the dangling roots and the underside of leaves. I have some corys that actually spend more time up in the roots of Water Sprite than on the substrate.
frogbit didn't work out in my tank either melted away in about a week (un covered tank) id go with B's suggestions.
I had some Amazon Frogbit in my tanks for a bit and they started off really well. Eventually it all just died and did nothing more than create a mess. Even when trying to keep water movement to a minimum all pond type surface plants have failed to last longer than 6 months in my tanks.
Wisteria was always the best performer, but looks hideous when floating in my opinion.
