quick q about red claw crabs
right i am in the process of setting up a tank for my son to have some red claw crabs. io have done a whole load of research and am confident that i am planning everything correctly.
however, there is one question. the lfs keeps these crabs in full aquarium conditions and have them in freshwater. my research has told me they should have access to air (sorted) and be in brackish conditions.
should i have my tank at brackish conditions ready for them or would it be a better idea to put them in freshwater and increase the salinity gradually with weekly water changes?
actually while i'm here i have another q. any plant recommendations for them. i know they will probably tear them down etc but i dont mind replacing them
I bought fiddler crabs from a similar situation, and I just slowly drip acclimated them over a few hours. They were both totally fine. Although don't be shocked if they disappear for a while to moult. They don't have very much calcium, iodine or privacy to moult in the fish store tank, so a lot of them are very relieved when they get in good conditions. The tank I put them in had an SG of 1.010. Also, make sure you have a hydrometer that can test low end salinity.
As for plants, mangroves are one of the few that will work in that salinity. Plus, you can grow them into cool islands :)
As a last note, make sure you have a good lid on them, or they will run away!!
thank you very much will be on the lookout for the mangrove
No prob! You may be able to find it in some non fishy places like a gardening store or in pond supplies. Or you'll easily find it online. I've seen people on craigslist selling it around me, but none of my LFS's carry it.
Ps- you're gonna need to do a lot of trimming on the mangrove to keep it small. Think bonsai mangrove...
