I run it 24/7 with no adverse affects. Make sure to change it weekly if you do decide to run it.

I use it 24/7 and change it every 2nd week.

Carbon removes organic waste from the system which is not otherwise removed by the protein skimmer. The same organics tint the water and reduce light penetration.

For these reasons, I believe it is worth the expense. Provided you use it properly and change it on the scheduled date.
